Alcoholic beverages have been around since very nearly the dawn of man some 10 000 years ago (though this is speculative at this time) with archaeological evidence of wine is found as early as 7000 BC in China. It predated the written language by many thousands of years. But one thing you can be sure of is that not long after it was discovered, men and women were coming up with witty, sexy and thoughtful quips and quotes about the subject of their favourite tipple we’ve come to know as wine.
And in the following 10 000 odd years that most certainly continues and will do so for quite a few more. So what follows is a collection of some of the most outstanding and sometimes, only sometimes the most thought-provoking quotes that people have come up with in that time.
“I cook with wine, sometimes I even add it to the food.” - W.C. Fields
“Wine is one of the most civilized things in the world and one of the most natural things of the world that has been brought to the greatest perfection, and it offers a greater range for enjoyment and appreciation than, possibly, any other purely sensory thing.” - Ernest Hemingway
“If reassurances could dull pain, nobody would ever go to the trouble of pressing grapes.” - Scott Lynch
“Wine can be a better teacher than ink, and banter is often better than books” - Stephen Fry
“Nothing more excellent or valuable than wine was every granted by the gods to man." - Plato
"Wine has been a part of civilized life for some seven thousand years. It is the only beverage that feeds the body, soul and spirit of man and at the same time stimulates the mind..." - Robert Mondavi
"Wine makes a man more pleased with himself, I do not say that it makes
him more pleasing to others." - Samuel Johnson
“In victory, you deserve champagne. In defeat, you need it.” - Napoleon Bonaparte
"Wine makes daily living easier, less hurried, with fewer tensions and more tolerance." - Benjamin Franklin
"Drink wine, not labels." - Dr. Maynard Amerine
"I like best the wine drunk at the cost of others." - Diogenese the Cynic
"Quickly, bring me a beaker of wine, so that I may wet my mind and say something clever." – Aristophanes
“Men are like wine – some turn to vinegar, but the best improve with age.” - Pope John XXIII
“Age is just a number. It’s totally irrelevant, Unless, of course, you happen to be a
bottle of wine.” - Joan Collins
“Accept what life offers you and try to drink from every cup. All wines should be tasted; some should only be sipped, but with others, drink the whole bottle.” - Paulo Coelho
“A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.” - Louis Pasteur
“Wine improves with age. The older I get, the better I like it.” - Anonymous
While the above quotes don’t even begin to scratch the surface and there can be no doubt that some of them where uttered while heavily under the influence of the very subject they were commenting on. They are some of our favourites from crude and rude to funny and including some deep soul-searching concepts on the amazing relationship that mankind has had with wine through the ages. A number of these delightful quotes have been around for a very long time and I am in not doubt will be with us for many years to come.
